This three-story structure with partial basement required a laboratory testing program to determine the compressibility and strength properties of a thick deposit of clay. The goal was to evaluate post construction settlement in order to eliminate the need for expensive pile foundations. Consolidation tests on undisturbed tube samples were used to determine the stress history and compressibility of the clay. Spread footing foundations were confirmed, however a filter fabric and crushed stone matting were used to protect the soft bearing materials. Foundation perimeter and underslab drainage were also part of the design. Our follow through during construction contributed to the successful completion of the project.
