As 2017 comes to a close, GNCB reflects on this year’s achievements and prepares for another year of exciting challenges. Our structural, geotechnical, and preservation engineers were involved in projects from a variety of sectors this year. Construction for some of these projects, such as The CT Cancer Foundation Headquarters , the adaptive reuse of Holdredge Garage , and the renovation of Yale University’s Wright Laboratory came to a close this year. Other projects are preparing to move into additional phases of work including St. Michael Church , Washington Village Apartment Complex, The Barnum Museum , Ponemah Mills , and the Northampton Arts Trust.

Team Developments

A number of changes were made to GNCB’s team in 2017. This year marks the first year of Charles Brown’s presidency with the firm. We were fortunate to have Eleanor Phetteplace of Roger Williams University with us this summer as our engineering intern, and also welcomed a new full-time employee, Zoe Laird of the University of New Haven, to our team as a Design Engineer. Lastly, we are pleased that a new licensure has been added to our team as Amy Jagaczewski , GNCB Engineer, has earned her CT Professional Engineer License.

Professional Participation

Our geotechnical and historic preservation engineers were invited to present at this year’s Connecticut Society of Civil Engineer’s Fall Geotechnical Seminar on the adaptive reuse of Holdredge Garage. This project was recognized at CSCE’s Achievement in Civil Engineering Awards in the Structural Engineering and Sustainability categories. GNCB worked with a number of Congregational Churches in 2017 which afforded us the opportunity to talk with Northeastern University’s student chapter of ASCE on New England Congregational Churches and traditional timber framing. PDFs of both presentations can be found below. Additionally, GNCB attended the Association for Preservation Technology International’s annual conference in Ottawa, Canada in October.

Look Ahead for 2018

GNCB now looks ahead to on-going and new projects in 2018. We have numerous academic, cultural, residential, and industrial projects throughout the Northeast in the works and we are excited to share the evolution of each as our work progresses. We also look forward to nurturing our relationships with currents clients as well as developing new ones. Thank you to our Clients and our Team for an exciting and prosperous year in the making.

After over 50 rewarding years of geotechnical engineering practice, the last 28 of which were with GNCB as an Associate, David Freed retired on December 31, 2023. In 1995, David established the geotechnical engineering practice that provided many of GNCB’s clients, as well as his core clients, an integrated engineering service in foundation design. David’s presence both enhanced the structural engineering staff with a greater understanding of geotechnical theory and practice as well as provided the firm’s clients with a fortuitous combination of structural and geotechnical engineering services that lasted throughout the project. David’s experiences at GNCB provided the basis for his paper “Benefits of In-House Collaboration of Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Services” that appeared in the 2008 Geotechnical Special Publication No. 180 that honored his University of Florida professor, Dr. John Schmertmann. David’s geotechnical work crossed a wide range of projects and foundation types; he developed an expertise in resolving construction problems. He will be greatly missed at the firm, but please join us in wishing David all the best in his retirement.
